Parents often have a “dream” of their life with their children, regardless of whether the parents are biological, foster or adoptive parents. This “dream” will evolve and change throughout the life of the child as reality and fantasy conflict. Usually, the fantasy and the dream are founded on raising a child whose brain has not been changed by prenatal alcohol exposure which requires an entirely different set of tools and expectations. Parents will experience grief and loss as they accept and adjust to raising a child impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure. Additionally, the individual impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure will also experience grief and loss as they come to realize that they experience the world differently than their peers. This training will explore the grief experience of the parent and the individual with an FASD and how providers can support both in their grief and loss process.
