This week, we’re showcasing another phenomenal young talent – New Orleans clarinetist / vocalist Chloe Feoranzo – on a 1930’s Parisian jazz remake of Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” from OK Computer. Watch:

Chloe is an exciting reminder that the tradition of classic jazz is very much alive and well among younger generations today. She discovered jazz very young, and has been performing worldwide and since the age of 15, winning numerous awards for her beautiful clarinet tone and lyrical phrasing that calls to mind Benny Goodman, Sidney Bechet, and other clarinet greats of the past. To top it all, I’m told by her fans that she’s an excellent swing dancer, as well.
Our version of Radiohead’s “No Surprises” (original version here) imagines what the song would sound like in a Parisian nightclub in the ’30s, during the days of Django Reinhart and Stephane Grappelli. The eerily existential lyrics give a David Lynch-like atmosphere to the whole thing, and Chloe’s clear, unadorned delivery of them fits perfectly.
